It’s not just a song by Chubby Checker from back in 1960. Twisting asanas are very beneficial poses in yoga. Both seated & standing twist poses help lengthen & strengthen muscles & keeps joints lubricated when moving in the natural flowing range of the body.
Twists also aid with digestion & distribution of nutrients in the body. Incorporating these poses in your yoga practice or in your everyday routines will help cleanse the mind & the body. They help center us while detoxifying the body.
I have personally found that having some kind of twisting pose in my practice makes me feel energized, improves my mood & calms my nervous system. The sides of my body feel open. I have also noticed I look leaner.
Yoga is all about breathing. Twists allow your body to open up & stretch your ribcage so that your lungs can expand, which makes breathing feel freer. Practicing twists improves your posture which can alleviate minor back aches & pains.
To do a twist safely, make sure you are sitting tall, allowing your spine to lengthen. Lengthen when you inhale. Then twist as you exhale. Engage your abdominal muscles & feel the twist & the rotation through your spine. I would not suggest doing twists poses if you are pregnant or have injuries to your back &/or spine.
Namaste from me & my pigeon friends 😉
